SMOS RF Interference Scenario: Status and Actions Taken to Improve the RFI Environment in the 1400-1427 MHz Passive Band

چکیده
ESA’s Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission is perturbed with Radio Frequency Interferences (RFI) that jeopardize part of its scientific retrievals in some areas in the World, especially over continental areas in Europe, south Asia and the Middle East. Areas affected by RFIs might led to data loss or to underestimation of soil moisture and salinity retrievals, The SMOS team has put in place a few strategies that, one year after launch, have already improved the RFI situation in Europe where half of the sources have been switched off. Index Terms Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Mission, Radio Frequency Interferences, L-Band radiometry, satellite remote sensing. Manuscript received Month April, 2011. Radio Frequency Interference and the SMAP Radiometer: Risk Assessment and Reduction
Achieving the soil moisture retrieval goals set for the SMAP mission [1]-[2] requires avoiding any significant degradations of SMAP’s L-band radiometer observations. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is an important risk factor, even given the “protected” status of the 1400-1427 MHz band within which the radiometer operates. RFI forecasts based on known radar sources were used in initial plann...
متن کاملRadio-Frequency Interference Detection and Mitigation Algorithms for Synthetic Aperture Radiometers
The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission in November 2, 2009. SMOS uses a new type of instrument, a synthetic aperture radiometer named MIRAS that provides full-polarimetric multi-angular L-band brightness temperatures, from which regular and global maps of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) and Soil Moisture (SM) are generated. Although ...
متن کاملAirborne Remote Observations of L-band Radio Frequency Interference and Implications for Satellite Missions
Passive remote sensing of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere from space has significant importance in operational and research environmental studies, in particular for the scientific understanding, monitoring and prediction of climate change and its impacts. Passive remote sensing requires the measurement of naturally occurring radiations, usually of very low power levels, which contain essenti...
متن کاملExamination of a simple pulse-blanking technique for radio frequency interference mitigation
[1] Radiometry at L band can be adversely impacted by radio frequency interference (RFI) due to the presence of numerous sources, especially pulsed RFI from radars operating below 1400 MHz. RFI mitigation is very important to deal with this problem. A simple strategy for reducing pulsed RFI, termed ‘‘asynchronous pulse blanking’’ (APB), has been implemented in a digital receiver developed at Oh...
